An Injection Mold is a tool used in the injection molding process, which is one of the most common methods for manufacturing plastic parts in the manufacturing industry. The injection mold consists of two halves, a fixed half and a movable half, which come together to form a cavity where the melted plastic is injected.

The purpose of the Injection Mold Half is to enable the production of plastic parts in large quantities and with high precision. The injection molding process involves injecting melted plasc into the mold, allowing it to cool and solidify before opening the mold and extracting the molded part.

Material

Injection Molds are typically made from corrosion-resistant, durable materials capable of
withstanding high temperatures and pressures. Common materials used for injection molds include tool steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys.

Manufacturing process

The manufacturing process for creating molds involves employing precision machining techniques such as milling and turning. These techniques are used to shape the intiial material blocks into the desired mold form. Additionally, further operations like grinding and polishing are conducted to achieve a smooth and precise surface finish on the mold cavities. To create complex cavities, electrical discharge machining (EDM) techniques are also utilized.

Challenges occur when machining intricate geometries with limited tool access. In such cases, smaller tools with lower material removal rates are required. Moreover, the high mass and density of the material make it unsuitable for powder metal prinng, and the presence of fine features limits the effectiveness of WAAM.
