The Spanish company SICNOVA 3D, based in Linares, markets Meltio’s additive manufacturing machines in Spain. The Spanish defence ministry considers this project to be of “particular importance” in terms of meeting its European and NATO commitments.
Spain’s Secretary of State for Defence, Amparo Valcarce, today signed an agreement with the company Soluciones Sicnova de Linares (Jaén) to implement “joint actions for the development and execution of a digitisation strategy that simplifies the manufacture of parts and spares in their supply chains”.
The value of the agreement is estimated at 82.6 million euros. Sicnova markets Meltio , a 3D additive printing machine manufacturer in Spain, which has already signed contracts with the US Navy and has even taken one of its printers on board a US warship.
By 3D printing parts, there is no need to stock them, as they can be produced as and when required. The printers can even be moved in containers and easily deployed close to theatres of operation.
Spanish defence considers this project to be particularly important in meeting Spain’s international commitments, both within the framework of NATO and the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP), in line with the agreement of the Board of Governors on 19 May authorising the agreement signed today.
Meltio is a Spanish company incorporated in 2019, dedicated to the development of metal 3D printing systems, with customers in more than 60 countries by 2022, the result of a joint venture between Additec, a Las Vegas-based technology company, and Sicnova, a distributor of 3D printing equipment.
Meltio has the strategic support of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, and partnerships with Phillips Corporation in the United States and Multistation Sas in France. Innovation is key for the company, which has filed a worldwide patent for the first laser head capable of producing 100% dense parts from wire. The patent enables Meltio’s 3D printing machines to work “at low cost” in additive metal manufacturing with welding wire, which is cheaper and presents fewer occupational health problems than powder, which the industry has been using for a quarter of a century in this sector.
Multistation, based in Paris and Saint Malo, distributes Meltio systems in France and has already installed numerous Meltio machines at industrial customers, several universities, the CEA, the CNES and the DGA.
