Cevotec adds software, layup features to FPP technology

Artist Studio updates and patch layup options continues to progress fiber patch placement (FPP) capabilities for composite tanks and aerostructures.

Cevotec (Munich, Germany) continues to advance its composite tank reinforcement technology, fiber patch placement (FPP), including recent developments to Artist Studio CAD/CAM software and launch of the Smart Gripper concept.

Artist Studio now provides additional support for finite element analysis (FEA), enabling more optimal simulation precision for components with complex curvatures. A new mapping algorithm ensures accurate modeling for pressure vessel dome reinforcements, optimizing structural analyses and improving product quality. These innovations are meant to empower manufacturers to easily implement tank reinforcement designs.

Cevotec has also launched the Smart Gripper concept for increased flexibility in complex fiber layups of composite aerostructures. Smart Grippers provide tailored stiffness distribution so that they can easily adapt to convex and concave surfaces. According to the company, this ensures consistent compaction and reduces the need for intermediate debulking. The grippers also feature individually controlled suction zones made for handling patches of various sizes on larger grippers, enhancing flexibility and productivity. Current developments at Cevotec also include an active gripper deformation feature, further expanding the range of suitable 3D geometries for high-precision layup.

The Smart Gripper’s material flexibility was recently an enabler for the National Composite Center (NCC), in which its members demonstrated how FPP can recycle up to 80% of dry fiber manufacturing waste.

Based on a collaboration with Fuji Industries, Cevotec has commissioned a Sampa Pro-PV FPP system for Nagoya University’s National Composite Center
(NCC) in Japan, which will be inaugurated in March.
